This is a single exposure, taken at 11:28 PM at the North Pasture, Stoddard, NH. Camera settings were f/4.0 @ 30 seconds, ISO 800. This scene was side-lit by the moon and although my eyes had difficulty perceiving any shadow detail, the combination of long exposure, high ISO and moonlight was enough to bring it out. I opened shadows further in post process, applied a curves adjustment and a soft-light overlay to enhance the image. The light on the horizon I believe is due to light pollution reflecting off the cloud bank and was not visible or apparent to the naked eye, another likely result of the long exposure time.

The Hunter

Monday, December 30, 2013 Orion the Hunter stalks his quarry in the skies over the barn on this cold winter evening.

Another star trails experiment, 108 frames, 30 seconds each, stacked. A 29% waxing crescent moon provided some ambient lighting on the spruce and pine trees.

For this image I shot a 30 second exposure every 45 seconds using the D700's built-in interval timer. The resulting 95 images were then stacked to achieve the time lapse sequence/star movement. The road (which is not as close as it appears) is visible due to passing cars captured in approximately 25 of the frames. The lighting in the lower part of the image is from the inside and outside barn lights.

Some short star trails over the Ashuelot River this evening. 70 images at 30 seconds each, stacked. There were supposed to be 120 images but apparently I messed up the camera settings.

A southeasterly view of star trails, 200 frames @ 30 seconds each, stacked. In three frames the trees were light painted with a large flashlight as there was no ambient light available to illuminate them on this night.
