Saturday, February 12, 2011 "Mrs. Elusive" (Pileated Woodpecker) I could hear her tapping when I stepped out onto the deck. She was in the trees just the other side of the stone wall, beyond the horse paddock. I started out, saying hello to Caspian on the way, and soon found myself sunk in belt high snow. Not the best conditions to sneak up on a Pileated Woodpecker. Although I managed to get fairly close, a clear shot was difficult. Fortunately I had taken the E-3 and the 50-200 lens. ISO 1000 @ 200mm (400mm - 35mm equivalent) Choose X2 for best viewing. Note: I've corrected the title for this image as I believe this is a female Pileated, per the black stripe below the eye.
Friday, February 11, 2011 Suspended Operations This morning's temperature is -17 F (-27 C) With the woods full of waist-deep snow, even Jason's forwarder is sitting idle these days.
