Tuesday, February 28, 2012 Deer Crossing A very small, young deer crossed the trail in the Wilderness Area sometime this past weekend. It was not alone as larger tracks indicate the presence of two adults as well. The deer are finding it easy going with the lack of snow cover this year. Some snow is predicted for tomorrow and Thursday.
Monday, February 27, 2012 Future Harvest Yesterday I extracted these wild blueberry seeds from a small portion of last summer's frozen pickings. After a cold dormancy of at least 90 days the seeds can be removed, dried and eventually sown. I hope to successfully start a number of seedlings to eventually set outside. I've also ordered some older, bare root plants from a local nursery for delivery in May, just to be on the safe side.
Sunday, February 26, 2012 Korvapuusti This was my first attempt at the Finnish cinnamon roll called Korvapuusti. They are passable, but I will need more practice as the dough was not quite what I had hoped for. These are quite tasty, nevertheless, and made for a relaxing afternoon following yesterday's exertions on the brush piles.
