Thursday, May 17, 2012 Painted Trillium (Trillium undulatum ) The Painted Trilliums are quietly blooming in the woods. You have to look closely for them as they do not tend to advertise their presence. This image is from Tuesday.
Tuesday, May 15, 2012 A Bird In the Hand (photo by Ian) This afternoon Ian and Lisa both heard a thump at the window. They found this little fellow lying belly up on the front lawn, stunned from a hard impact with the window glass. Happily he appeared to regain his wits after a few minutes of hand holding, then completed his recovery in a nearby tree, For the record, this is a Magnolia Warbler (Setophaga magnolia).
Sunday, May 13, 2012 White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis) We are quite fortunate to have a healthy population of these boreal songbirds in residence. Several have recently moved into a small brush pile in the woods along the back yard. Their song is delightful and I often wake to hear them singing in the middle of the night.
