Not the cleanest cutting job on my part. My chain went south and I hadn't a backup handy so had to make do. But it's just firewood so no matter. Still some lengths of trunk buried in the snow along with the main trunk. I'll wait for spring and a new chain before tackling what's left.Saturday, February 11, 2023
I've been worried about this tree for years. 10 feet up it diverged into two large trunks with a visible seam opening at the V and working downward. In winter, ice and snow would accumulate there. I knew the tree would eventually split and fall, with one half coming down on top of the house. I did not realize that the seam ran all the way down the trunk, as shown here. It was full of frost and would surely have fallen on its own, sooner rather than later.
Cold Snap II
Friday, February 3, 2023
Our relatively mild January is over and February is showing some teeth.
It was -2F (-18C) at 3:30 this afternoon and the windchill was -15F.
The boys are having afternoon hay by the shed while their stalls are cleaned.
They'll spend the night inside with the overnight temperature falling to -20F (-28C).
Even Oliver wears a jacket in this weather.
